The Bible as the rule of faith and practice
Scripture should guide doctrine, spiritual experience, decisions, and Christian life.
To say that the Bible is the rule of faith and practice means that it is not only for occasional inspiration. It guides what we believe, how we evaluate spiritual experiences, and how we live before God.
This does not diminish the importance of teachers, community, or tradition. But it places all of them under the examination of Scripture.
The Word corrects our preferences
It is possible to use religious language to defend personal preferences. The Bible calls us to take the opposite path: to allow the Word to correct our ideas.
This requires humility. The sincere student does not look only for texts that confirm what he already thinks. He learns to hear the whole of Scripture.
Experience needs discernment
Not every intense emotion is direction from God. Not every ancient tradition is faithful. Not every popular argument is biblical. The Word provides a standard for discernment.
When the Bible governs faith, the Christian finds security. Truth no longer depends on trends, pressure, or changing opinions.
